The continuous casting of bars and tubes uses a technique of water cooling with the heavily chilled metal brought to size through dies. A continuous flow of material of excellent density is produced in lengths especially suitable for use on automatic lathes with bar feed mechanisms.
The metal structure is superior to that of the conventional chill cast process and there is much less density throughout a section, the closeness of grain being of considerable advantage in the manufacture of high quality bearings. Continuous cast bronze has a higher average tensile strength, elongation and hardness than chill cast bronze of the same composition with a lower permanent reduction under compression
